Start A Local Committee

Local Committees can be formed by regions, counties, cities, towns, or local community organizations, such as historical societies, student organizations, and advisory councils.

If your region, county, city, town, or community is not listed below, here are some tips on how to start the process:

To form a Local or Regional America250MI Committee and join in the planning for this large-scale commemoration, we ask that the local governing body designate a liaison to work with the America250MI Committee, who will serve as the local contact with the state committee, participate in planning meetings, and communicate regularly on events occurring within the locality. While the Committee is planning statewide programs and events, strong involvement at the local level is crucial. The Committee is working with hundreds of partners across the state to encourage and support local participation. Local history, after all, is the foundation on which all else is built.

For those localities that form official Local America250MI Committees, as evidenced by the passing of a proclamation, the designation of a local contact, and the formation of a Local or Regional America250MI Committee, the state Committee will provide a framework for commemorative events and make available programming and educational resources, as well as providing branding guidance in accordance with America250MI.

To every extent possible, the local committee should include representatives from:
1. Tourism, especially local attractions, lodging, and restaurants
2. Economic development
3. Education
4. Tribal representatives
5. Museums and historic sites
6. Local historical and cultural groups, including arts
7. Local government, including parks and recreation

8. Community advocates and stakeholders

9. Youth Leaders and engagement groups

10. Any other interested members of your community
